Recognizing House Water Drainage problems

Water damage not only destroy your home, but it is also very bad for your health. That is why it is important to know how to recognize water damage.

To be able to prevent water damage from occurring you first need to know what the causes are, and there are many. Then you need to know how to detect water damage so that you can deal with it effectively and quickly.

Rainwater accumulates in many places and this is more likely to occur during heavier rains. It can accumulate along your foundation or even under your floor, as well as on the roof during the rainy season unless you have an adequate drainage system that moves it away from the house.

If your gutters are clogged with debris such as leaves and twigs, the rainwater will be blocked and seep up underneath your shingles causing roof damage or damage to your walls. Make sure your gutters are cleaned regularly.

Drains can also become clogged and  not be able to move the water away from your home. This can result in seepage around the foundation and can cause damage your basement.

Windows and doors that are not installed professionally or by someone who knows the proper way to install them can lead to faulty seals and leaks. This can cause water damage to walls and wetness around the doors or windows.

If your roof is old there is the possibility that it may begin to leak. Even if your roof is newer, chimneys, skylights, and exhaust fan seals can break down and cause leaks. On older roofs shingles should be regularly checked to make sure there are no cracked or curled shingles where moisture can get in. If there is replace them.

Check seals often and try to reseal at least once a year. If you have a flat roof the drains can sometimes become clogged which will cause water to remain on the roof and increase your chance of a leak. So always make sure your drains are open and clear.

Your attic should be properly insulated and ventilated. If the ventilation isn’t sufficient, the snow on the roof will turn into ice and the weight can cause damage to the shingles.

Water damage poses risks to both the structure itself and the health of any individuals living in the dwelling. Dampness and humidity encourage the growth of mildew and mold spores which can cause immune disorders, cancer, pathogenic diseases, and even some forms of pneumonia. Allergies are very common and can result in headaches, nausea, asthma, diarrhea, and chronic fatigue.

Water damage can saturate your home and cause an host of structural damages including warping and rotting, destroying wallboard, weakening concrete, and twisting columns and supports. And it can even cause stairs, roofs, or floors to collapse and electrical systems to short out and cause fires.

You should do an annual inspection of your home before the rainy season hits, looking for any sealant that has eroded, improper drainage or clogged drainage, and any roof shingles, door jams, or window frames that need repair.

Once the rainy season starts watch for any signs of water damage and address them immediately. If you are unable to fix the problem yourself then call a qualified repairman and make an appointment as soon as possible before the problem becomes worse.

If mold or mildew has begun forming make sure you treat it immediately with a product that kills these spores. Be sure to keep children away from areas where there may be mold or mildew.

Once you understand what causes water damage and how to prevent water damage, it shouldn’t be a problem in the future.

If any of these indicators are present, you should call a professional who is experienced in water damage prevention.
